Background

This project is testing how air quality affects bird behavior. In this project we will be doing ethograms and bird surveys.

Question: How does air quality affect the behavior of bird species?

Hypothesis: If the air quality rises then the behavior of birds will become more active.

Variables: Birds, Location , Air Quality, Time

Data Collection: Qualitative and quantitative

About Ethogram

Ethograms are a way to collect data for various animal behaviors. The Ethogram sheet will contain information such as time of day, location , wind and sky conditions , and temperature. It will also include the different behaviors such as eating , resting , and cleaning. An ethogram sheet is also timed.  By this we can see the behaviors change over time.

About Bird Survey

A bird survey is a way to collect data of birds found in one location. The stationary bird survey requires you to stay in one location for a given time , and record the different species of birds that arrive in that location.

About bird behavior

  • Birds use actions as a way to communicate to their surroundings

  • Bird behavior includes

    • Fighting

    • Eating

    • Sleeping

    • Cleaning

    • Feeding young

    • Flying

    • Standing

- Bird behavior is different within species

- some birds are more territorial

- Movement , posture , flight pattern , feeding style.. ect. all help in identifying the differences of birds

Air quality

  • Differs from location

  • Air cast is used to test air quality

    • Captures humidity , sound , temperature , and particulate matter
