STEP 1. CREATE THE BAITS

How to make the banana bait:

Banana and brown sugar mixture

a.Place a small piece of the banana into one tube

b.add a pinch of brown sugar into the tube with the banana

c. add 1 ml of water into the tube with a pipette.

Cookie Bait

a. get a test tube

b.Get the sandies pecan cookie

c.Place a small amount of the cookie into the test tube

 

 

STEP 2. Label each test tube accoring to the bait (ex: cookie , banana)

STEP 3.Find a non-paved area and place one banana bait and one cookie bait

 

STEP 4.Find a paved area and place a cookie and banana bait

 

STEP 5.To make sure the baits stay on the pavement  place duct tape on top of them

 

STEP 6.Take a point on epicollect on your tablet

 

STEP 7.Wait an hour before collecting the baits

 

STEP 8.Freeze them for about a day

Procedure

(In the lab)

  1. Take the Ziploc bags containing the frozen ants out of the freezer

  2. Empty each test tube into separate petri dishes

  3. Separate the ants from the baits

  4. Add the separated ants into another petri dish

    1. Count the ants as you separate

  5. Set up the microscopes

  6. Place the petri dish containing the ants under the microscope lens

  7. Try to identify what ants the bait trapped

  8. After identifying the ants , place them into a glass vial

    1. If the ants are different from one another place them into separate glass vials

  9. Once the ants are in the glass vial , fill it with isopropyl all the way to the top

  10. With a pencil and a small piece of paper write the date of which the ants were collected,the field number, the bait , and the ant species.

  11. Place the small piece of paper with information into the glass vials
